The problem with crowdfunding is that the projects that ought to get some money often lose out to the weird and wonderful pet projects of would-be internet millionaires who lack discretion. If, for example, an IndieGoGo campaign promises a Bluetooth speaker that's built in the shape of a robot statue, which also has video game and comic book cross-promotional tie-ins (again, based on a speaker), you can guarantee that the project is going to be funded to the tune of $100,000.

The explainer video for the Sound Heroes concept is incredibly full of itself, and really has to be seen to be believed. A very self-satisfied voice announces that this speaker (again, shaped like a 17-inch-tall robot) will astonish and delight everybody who enters the owner's house, because it's a speaker that's shaped like a "futuristic polygonal humanoid"! What more could you want from a speaker?

This device doesn't just play music from your phone, because that would be too simple. It's also a wireless charger for your smartphone, and a Wi-Fi extender. Plus, it lights up with little LEDs that "illuminates your room with over 16 million color variations of ambient light," and it has a built-in smoke machine.

Yes, a built-in smoke machine.

Sadly, even with $120,000 behind the project, Sound Heroes has fallen short of the $5 million goal that the team behind this thing wanted before they'd commit to making a full video game based on this brand. That's right—the creators of this abomination genuinely entertained the possibility that they'd become millionaires overnight thanks to a ridiculous speaker that looks like a polygonal Pepsi Man.

If the popularity of crowdfunding projects has taught us anything over the past few years, it's that a fool and their money are easily parted. Sound Heroes is the latest in a long line of nonsense gadgets that people with far too much money are willing to fund, despite the risk to their investment and the fact that all they're getting out of it is a speaker that's been fused with an action figure.
