From Barbarella's daring ensembles to the mini-dresses and blazing gold communicators of the original Star Trek series to the sleek, modern looks seen in movies like Ex Machina, our idea of futuristic fashion spans a wide range. But one recent development shows just how far fashion can go: Amazon researchers are developing artificial intelligence that could potentially shape the future of fashion.

According to Kavita Bala, a professor at Cornell University who participated in a machine learning and fashion workshop organized by Amazon,"There's been a whole move from companies like Amazon trying to understand how fashion develops in the world...This is completely changing the industry."

In Israel, Amazon researchers are developing machine learning techniques that can determine whether an outfit or garment is stylish. Traditional computing would require an image to be extensively labeled to extract such a conclusion, but this tech would be able to do this with just a few labels, making it applicable in real-world scenarios. This could even be applied to social media, where brands and consumers post photos of products. At Lab126, a San Francisco-based Amazon research group, a team has created an algorithm that might even be called a fashion designer. The algorithm is given a multitude of images and "learns" from them. Using this "knowledge," it can generate similar, but unique, styles from scratch.

One day, the outfit you're wearing might be designed and styled by an AI, based on decades of fashion information and imagery. This could shape the way that we purchase clothes, how they're manufactured, even how much they cost. But beyond this, the introduction of AI into fashion could forever change how we view style. Maybe all of those mid-century sci-fi movies really were predicting the future of fashion with their chrome and bold shapes.
