Thousands of Russians had a literal close encounter last night with a giant glowing ball UFO that appeared in the sky above the city of Salekhard in Northern Siberia.

The gut reaction from the people on the ground was that it was an aurora or that aliens had finally landed, but there may be a more man-made explanation for the mindblowing light show.

"The glowing ball rose from behind the trees and moved in my direction," said photographer Sergey Anisimov, whose images of the event are all over the net today. He said that it thought it was a really big searchlight, but the way everything was moving changed his opinion.

The ball lingered over the landscape for a bit before dissolving into an arc then disappearing as quickly as it appeared.

Scientists have yet to confirm the origin of the lights, but reports have attributed the light show to the Russian military's testing of Topol rockets.

Four of the intercontinental ballistic missiles were launched on Putin's orders, one from a submarine near Norway, two from another sub near northern Japan, and another from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in Russia.

The glowing ball is said to be the trail left by at least one of missiles, which, depending on where you were standing, just happened to blend with last night's aurora to create the ominous orb perfectly captured by Anisimov's camera.

At least that's the story they're going with.

Similar confusion was sparked back in September when more of the advanced missiles were being tested in the Astrakhan region.

There was no aurora then, but Russian residents raced to social media to report similar UFO sightings over their homes.

Either the story checks out, or Russia is using missile tests to cover up what is really happening. I want to believe.
