In one of the weirdest stories to emerge from Russia recently, villagers claim to have found a Nazi briefcase full of alien skulls.

The chest was allegedly found in the village of Kamennomostsky, which is about a six-hour drive from Sochi, where the 2014 Winter Olympics were held, bearing the insignia of the Ahnenerbe, the Nazi archaeology project founded in 1935 to "scientifically" come up with evidence in support of the master race theory.

At the time of the discovery, Russian historian Igor Ogay reportedly referred to the skulls as "interesting," but could not say what species they came from or why the Nazis had them. The jaw bones for the skulls were missing, and a researcher named Vladimir Malikov noted that they appeared to "somewhat similar to the aliens."

"What connects the skull with the activities of the Ahnenerbe organization is hard to say," said Igor Ogay.

There are of course YouTube theories about Hitler's discovery and possible contact with beings from another world, but proof is lacking.

Deformed skulls have been found in Crimean tombs and elsewhere in Russia, but those were determined to have been artificially lengthened as a part of a Samaritan fighting culture over 2,000 years ago.

The jury is still out on the Nazi skulls, and there is not much in the way of readily available (and verified) information about them online.

Could the truth be as interesting as the theories floating around about Hitler's pow-wows with Martians?

Probably not, but we love that this is a thing and that it came out of Russia. Never a dull moment.
