Space—the final frontier, at least for warfare. Apart from the Outer Space Treaty, which prevents countries from installing weapons of mass destruction in orbit, there are very few rules for what is and is not permitted when it comes to space warfare.

That may change very soon—according to CNN, the US has learned China and Russia are planning anti-satellite rockets, jammers, and more:

Opening quote
"They've been building weapons, testing weapons, building weapons to operate from the earth in space, jamming weapons, laser weapons, and they have not kept it secret," Gen. John Hyten, the head of US Strategic Command, told an audience at the Reagan National Defense Forum in Simi Valley, California. "They're building those capabilities to challenge the United States of America, to challenge our allies, and to change the balance of power in the world..."
Closing quote

The US recently struck down legislation to create a Space Corps to deal with space-based threats, but that doesn't mean the military hasn't been coming out with new, insane projects, such as an autonomous stealth ship, new laser weaponry, and mind-altering brain chips for soldiers.

Still, as General John Hyten points out, the safety of the US satellite network is crucial—being jammed (or "dazzled," as he terms it) for even a few minutes can mean the difference between intercepting a missile launch from North Korea and allowing it to hit its target.

The solution, the general says, may be to change the rules of space—and make attacks on satellites an act of war, similar to shooting down an aircraft or launching a cyberattack on a military installation.

Paired with China's recently announced roadmap to become the leading country in aerospace tech, it seems warfare is going to start spilling into orbit and beyond. Maybe Martian colonists have the right idea: get off Earth before the EMPs and space lasers get out of hand.
