Elon Musk's 'Boring Company' is Making a $600 Branded Flamethrower
At some point, we're all going to have to get together and sit Elon Musk down for the biggest intervention of the history of the planet. Selling electric cars is to be commended, and shooting rockets (and electric cars) into space is fine even if Musk is a little too obsessed with setting up his own civilization on Mars.
Musk's Boring Company, an attempt to drill a bunch of tunnels under cities is a little worrying, but presumably, the resulting Hyperloops and advances in transportation will be worth it. But at the point where The Boring Company starts selling $600 branded flamethrowers, which they appear to be seriously considering, it's probably time to start questioning where Musk's ambitions will take him next.
As with so many of Musk's business moves, the flamethrowers feel like a joke that has gotten way out of hand. The Boring Company drilling enterprise has been selling branded hats on its website, and in December, Musk mentioned in an offhand comment that if they sell out, the company will start selling flamethrowers instead.

Fast forward to this week, when a password-protected page on The Boring Company's website was uncovered, and the incredibly easy password was cracked. The original password, which has since been changed, was "Flame" - let's hope SpaceX's security for the Falcon Heavy rocket is a little more tight.
Once on this secret web page, Twitter user FalconGridFin found what we'd all assumed wouldn't possibly be real: a prototype design for a genuine The Boring Company flamethrower, which might go up for sale once the page is made public.

As with the designs for the spacesuits that will be used on Musk's space tourist capsule, it seems that the aim here has been to make the flamethrower look as sci-fi as possible, with a white on black color scheme that brings to mind Stormtrooper equipment from Star Wars (or the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device if you're more into non-violent video games).
Essentially, it looks like the plan is to make a flamethrower that will make the user feel incredibly cool while setting fire to stuff, which almost feels like overkill as the device is already a handheld flamethrower. Some prototypes apparently exist already, which appear to be modified air rifles which shoot flames instead:
While on the surface this feels like standard Elon Musk nuttiness, there is a danger to making dangerous and unpredictable weapons that look like toys.
Here's hoping that the device will be sold responsibly, and that Elon Musk will come to his senses before he commissions his scientists to make a working lightsaber that's fit for commercial sale.
