The Self-Balancing Electric Unicycle is a Fascinating Reinvention of a Timeless Classic

It's true that you never forget how to ride a bike, but on the other hand, nobody will ever forget that you rode a unicycle.

Particularly if it's the Mega Hub Motor Electric Unicycle, a fantastic new contraption created by engineer and inventor John Dingley. With a brushless hub motor that runs on 3,000 Watts and a 17-inch wheel designed for electric motorcycles, the Electric Unicycle can balance all on its own and run with all the advantages of an electric bicycle, sans one wheel.

See it in action below:

Dingley has been working on electric unicycles for some time, having previously worked on a model he called the Lunar Rover. But the Mega Hub Motor Electric Unicycle manages with a brushless engine and a motor controller designed for electric boats, looking especially impressive for a one man build.

Perhaps the best detail is that the batteries are stored in a torpedo-looking attachment which also serves as a driver's seat, so you can feel like you're riding the missile in Doctor Strangelove anytime you take it out for a spin. And at the front is a headlamp pod from a 1950s motorcycle to complete the retro aesthetic (and which holds all the self-balancing electronics).

A small little yellow wheel also sits out front, perhaps for use in any balancing failures, but Dingley's videos clearly show the wheel off the ground the entire time. They don't appear to be for sale - this is just an engineer having fun, and making some impressive rides as a result.

It's almost a shame that Dingley doesn't have any plans to sell these. Somehow, riding one of these seems cooler than riding a hoverboard
