'First Man' Trailer Tells the Rocky History of Neil Armstrong's Moon Landing

Everyone knows about the first time humans landed on the Moon, and they can certainly quote Neil Armstrong's famous "One small step for man" line.

But now that NASA's sent people to the Moon a handful of times (if not recently), it's easy to forget just how possible it was that the Apollo 11 mission would fail, and then U.S. president Richard Nixon even had an alternate speech he would've read if the astronauts didn't make it back home. Beyond the chances of an explosion while heading to the Moon, there were major concerns that Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin might end up stranded there.

While Universal's upcoming historical drama First Man will likely be an extremely dramatized version of the mission, it's still a fascinating story that's worth telling. Also, it's got Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049) starring as Armstrong himself, and recent Academy Award winner Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land) on directing duties.

While still very much a Hollywood drama, the film is an adaptation of Armstrong's authorized biography First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong by James R. Hansen. The film rights to his biography were purchased all the way back in 2003 (by Clint Eastwood and Warner Bros, interestingly enough), but it wasn't until Universal bought it much after that the project acquired Gosling, Claire Foy, and Chazelle, and really got moving.

Beyond just covering the trip to the Moon, the film also seems to be covering much of Armstrong's astronaut work before then, including piloting a North American X-15 hypersonic aircraft to the border of space, and his work on the Gemini 8 space mission, which nearly ended in a critical failure.

The astronauts survived, as you can guess, and you may know the ending to the Apollo 11 mission as well, but there's a lot of gritty details which hopefully get included. First Man is scheduled to come out on October 12, 2018.
