You'd think that after 70 years, the Roswell crash site would be picked clean, but New Mexico geologist Frank Kimbler claims that eight years of metal-detecting around the area have turned up about 20 small, metallic fragments about the size of a fingernail, some of which appear to be not of this Earth.

"Some of it could be trash, camper trash, but some of it could be interesting," he said in an interview with KRQE, a New Mexico news organization. "Some of the material that I found out there has been tested and it has anomalies that suggest that it might be of extraterrestrial origin."

Kimbler apparently used an ordinary metal detector to find the fragments, and has searched the crash site a dozen times. While he was out there, he kept an eye out for government helicopters, afraid that he might end up under government surveillance...or worse. According to Kimbler: "I started looking around all over the place, looking to see if the helicopters were going to fly over, because you get paranoid when you read the stories of about Roswell and what's happened to people when they've come forward with stuff."

When Kimbler received a call from the Bureau of Land Management asking for him to come in for a talk, he thought the shadowy machinery of the US government was finally descending upon him to silence him forever. "I said sure, about had a heart attack. I'm going, 'Oh, they're going to arrest me, they're going to confiscate this material. I always thought that I was within my legal rights as a citizen of the U.S. to go out and metal detect."

But it turns out that the BLM had a much more mundane reason for calling him in—they just wanted to make sure he understood the laws regarding metal detecting. "It had a happy ending," said Kimbler. "I got clarification on the rules and regulations from the BLM and there was no confiscation of materials."

We'll see what Kimbler's independent investigation turn up, but for now, the metal fragments could be anything.
