Probably The Best Image Of Saturn...Ever
This is one remarkable image of Saturn. Well, it's actually 36 photos of Saturn painstakingly rolled into one, but i'm not one to quibble over semantics. Gordan Ugarkovic isn't even a full-time astrophotographer, but in this image he has created something that will have the professionals green with envy.
The image was pieced together from 30 photos taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft on October 10th. Of the image, Ugarkovic said "It's not geometrically accurate, but I tried coaxing the data into at least looking nice." Well I think it is safe to say he achieved his goal with this one.
Perhaps the most striking things about this image is the perfect bird's eye view of the planet's rings, which are rarely seen from such an angle. Naturally, when these rings are viewed off center, they have a more drawn out oval shape, but here we see them in an almost perfect circle.
Ugarkovic's image has been attracting a lot of praise from around the scientific community, so could this be his chance to turn something he confesses that he only "dabbles" in into a fully fledged career? Quite possibly, but for no he remains committed to his day job as a software engineer.
