NASA Releases Beautiful Mosaic Of Saturn And Earth As Seen By Cassini
A new panoramic mosaic released by NASA today shows Saturn as if it were being viewed through human eyes. Created with 141 images taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, the result is a stunning panoramic image of the ringed planet, which puts the sheer scale of our solar system into perspective. In its full form seen here the panorama represents a staggering span of 404,880 miles encompassing Saturn and every single one of its iconic rings.
As if this image was not impressive enough, it was taken on the day that the whole world smiled at the sky, the day that Earth was visible from Cassini's vantage point near Saturn. Using this annotated version of the image, you can zoom in on Earth which can be seen as a small, pale blue dot in the bottom right of the picture. Also visible are Mars and Venus in the top left.
Since its launch in 1997, Cassini has studied Saturn in unprecedented detail, unlocking the secrets of this ringed giant. And luckily for us, it will continue to do so until 2017, meaning there will be plenty more opportunities for stunning images like this one.
