Neil deGrasse Tyson Discusses Asteroids With A 9 Year Old
The other evening, famed astrophysicist and cult figure Neil deGrasse Tyson was giving a lecture at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. And, while NDGT is normally, and understandably the star of the show at such an event, when it came to Q&A time, a 9 year old boy called Jacob stole the show and everybody's hearts. Jacob, unperturbed by the large crowd and the larger than life figure of the speaker, approached the mic to ask Mr Tyson the following question:
"Why don't they just shoot a chunk of random material at the asteroid Apophis and either destroy it or get it out of the way"
The asteroid Apophis is a space rock that is expected to have a close encounter with our planet in the year 2029, an event that many warn has the potential to be catastrophic. Jacob who is clearly smart as a whip, makes a good point that one potential way get rid of this threat would be to shoot a piece of rock at Apophis in an effort to knock it off its course, something he expertly demonstrates using a clipboard and his hand.
And so begins a truly inspiring back and forth between one of the nation's greatest minds and what would appear to be one of the bright minds of the future. I mean, come on people, Jacob is 9 and he knows what a Non-Newtonian solid is!
