Meet Valkyrie - NASA's Robot Superhero

We've seen a lot of really cool robots over the years. We've seen Robot Gymnasts, we've seen Robotic Dogs, heck we've even seen Robots Playing AC/DC, but NASA's latest robotic production, Valkyrie, is by far the coolest yet and it could one day travel to alien planets.

Weighing in at 125kg and standing over 6ft tall, Valkyrie possesses super strength and a 'Glowing NASA Meatball' in his chest, features which have led to his being dubbed 'NASA's Superhero Robot'. Nicknames aside, Valkyrie and robots like him could have an exciting future of space travel ahead of him. NASA hopes that robots like Valkyrie will one day travel to planets like Mars and prepare the planet for the arrival of humans. Once humans arrive, they'll work together to construct living quarters, laboratories and carry out scientific exercises on the planet's surface.

As significant as his destiny may be in the future, much of the work that has gone into Valkyrie has been focused on making him look cool, hence that awesome 'Glowing Meatball' in his chest which was clearly inspired by Marvel's Iron Man.

If you think Valkyrie looks a little slow and cumbersome, that's because he was created in a startlingly short 9 months. So should he win first prize in the DARPA competition later this month, we could see a fully functioning Valkyrie robot toddling around in no time.
